 Chapter Two: I Thought That... This one's short — and brutal. You know how in grammar lessons we were taught that certain prepositions or expressions introduce the dative or genitive case? Well, “I thought that...” is a special expression. It doesn't introduce a case. It introduces a lie. Examples? “I thought you weren’t hungry, that’s why I didn’t cook.” “I thought you didn’t like romance, that’s why I didn’t bring flowers.” Oh, really? This is the kind of excuse we used to make when we were 10 and trying to escape the last class of the day. “I thought school ended early!” Meanwhile, we were halfway home with a sandwich in our hand and a very guilty conscience. Back then, it was sort of cute. Now? Not so much.  Let’s be honest.   Chapter ONE:  I’m Sorry! Of course, your mom taught you that it’s polite to say  “I’m sorry”  after an accidental burp—or even after, you know,  punching someone in the face.   “Say sorry, and all is forgiven!” But if you’re over 18, you’ve probably encountered a little word called  consequences —and unfortunately, simply following the penal code isn’t enough. Saying  “sorry”  after messing up won’t magically fix things anymore. There’s a difference between a burp and, let’s say,  lying to someone  or  insulting them. Here’s the harsh truth: nobody actually cares whether you  feel  sorry or not. What matters is that you’ve created a crack—sometimes a full-blown  earthquake —in another person’s world.
