Chapter Two: I Thought That...
This one's short — and brutal.
You know how in grammar lessons we were taught that certain prepositions or expressions introduce the dative or genitive case? Well, “I thought that...” is a special expression. It doesn't introduce a case. It introduces a lie.
Examples?
“I thought you weren’t hungry, that’s why I didn’t cook.”
“I thought you didn’t like romance, that’s why I didn’t bring flowers.”
Oh, really?
This is the kind of excuse we used to make when we were 10 and trying to escape the last class of the day. “I thought school ended early!” Meanwhile, we were halfway home with a sandwich in our hand and a very guilty conscience. Back then, it was sort of cute. Now? Not so much.
Let’s be honest. If you've hurt someone, neglected a responsibility, or dropped the ball entirely — who’s really going to believe your ridiculous “I thought that...” excuse? You might buy yourself a few seconds by confusing the other person with your lack of logic and sheer audacity. But spoiler alert: you've also just lost a chunk of their respect. Possibly forever.
Worth it? Probably
not.
Wouldn’t it be easier to just take responsibility and do the right thing ASAP (assuming it’s not already too late)? Definitely.
And don’t even try
this in the workplace. Your colleague or manager might not call you out, but
rest assured — you’ve just made yourself an enemy. And the silent ones are the
scariest.
